Homework Club Volunteers will strive again this school year to help local elementary children improve their reading, writing, and math skills. The program, in its first year, also gave children a safe place for food, fun, and fellowship.
This year’s program will be open Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning at 4 p.m. and serves grades first through fifth. Volunteers require no special experience with elementary children, but must pass a background check and have a desire to lovingly help children. High School students who have a special rapport with this age child are encouraged to offer their assistance. The time commitment for all volunteers begins at 3:30 p.m. and ends at 5:45 p.m. and can be offered on either day or both.
The program has been well received in the community as witnessed by a teacher at the elementary school last spring. When a child was asked if he was looking forward to summer vacation, the reply was, “Yes, but I want homework.” The child later clarified the puzzling statement by saying that the reason he wanted homework was because he really wanted to keep coming to Homework Club.
