The first order of business for the Youth Group is to get a new espresso machine in place. After seven wonderful years of service, the refurbished machine, which was purchased in 2007, finally quit.
The Supreme Bean is the Youth Group’s main source for fundraising. It not only provides coffee and cold drinks for members and visitors, but it teaches the youth skills, teamwork, commitment, and discipline. Many youth have been able to use their experience and time working at the Supreme Bean on job and college applications.
There is no line item in the church budget to support the Youth Group, so the donations through the Supreme Bean and other fundraisers provide the monetary base for all youth group activities, youth retreats, as well as mission projects.
The youth selected local missions to be the recipients of their time, labor, and money for the 2014-2015 school year. They plan to sponsor a Christmas party for the Homework Club in December and will be participating with other United Methodist youth in a Mission Immersion weekend at St. John UMC in January. The third area of interest is to provide some sort of service to the homeless population through Bean’s Café or Brother Francis Shelter.
Anyone new to UMCC, in 6th through 12th grade this school year, who wants to join the Youth Group, please come to the October 6 meeting, 4:00 p.m. in the Community Center (gym) for open gym and 5:00-7:00 p.m. for the formal activity and dinner.
