On behalf of the All Academies Association I wish to thank United Methodist Church of Chugiak for making the Community Center available to us on October 23 to host All-Academies Night. This event was long scheduled to occur at Chugiak High School; but at the last moment the venue canceled due to a district-wide moratorium on military recruiters on school grounds.
The purpose of All Academies Night (which occurs only once each year) is to provide an open house for interested and potential candidates to the Military (West Point), Naval (Annapolis), Air Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine Academies. Not only did the local admissions representatives set up booths… but admissions officers traveled to Alaska from the academies to provide first hand assistance to families of potential candidates.
Expecting up to 100 participants, we were suddenly faced with no venue. I called Donna Collins in the UMCC office to check on availability and within an hour Donna had obtained approval and we were signing the paperwork for use of the Community Center for the evening. Kay Abrams expedited the entire process and personally came to the church to help us open, set up, shut down and secure the center. Many said it was the best attended and most effective All Academy Night in years.
Again, a special thanks to Donna Collins and Kay Abrams, along with other church leaders and the congregation for living up to the motto “All Are Welcome.” You saved an important event in our corner of the world; an event that contributes to our security and the American way of life. – Scott Marcy
