The youth of the United Methodist Church of Chugiak treated the neighborhood children who attend the Homework Club to a Christmas party on December 18th. The children had anticipated the party but had no idea of the planned activities.
The children were met at the bus by the usual Homework Club staff and escorted downstairs to a generous after-school snack. That’s when the expected routine took a delightful turn. United Methodist youth and their adult leaders had set out activity stations throughout the gym. At any given time, groups of excited munchkins could be seen gathered around tables decorating thick aromatic gingerbread cookies, snipping polar fleece fabric to make decorative scarves, and decorating gift bags. Intermittently, groups of children tried, usually in vain, to pin the nose on a picture of Olaf, the much beloved snowman from Frozen, the movie.
By 5:30, a happy (and tired) bunch of kids were dressed to begin their walk home when they were blessed again with yet another surprise, new decorated folders for their homework papers. And as a final show of support for the staff, the youth helped escort the children back to their homes.
