Grants Given to Local Organizations

The Missions Committee met in September and deliberated on how best to distribute funds received from the amazingly successful Recycle for a Reason (R4R) mission, which is held monthly at the United Methodist Church of Chugiak (UMCC). Hard work by R4R volunteers and generous contributions made the following grants possible:

  • Love INC of Eagle River $2500
  • Senior Center Health Fair $500
  • After School Program. $600
  • Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Center $500

Love INC of Eagle River is supported by local churches and is a “go-to” organization for people in need, providing a channel for giving from various sources.

The senior Center Health Fair, chaired by Betty Burke, RN, offers healthcare information and free lab tests and screening.

The Homework Club, a mission happening within UMCC, offers a safe after school place for children who live primarily in nearby trailer courts. Supervised activities such as reading and help with homework are provided, as well as an opportunity to take part in fun, physical activities. Nutritious food is served to the kids participating in the program. Past funding from R4R has underwritten this mission and has included extras such as the purchase of bicycle helmets for these children.

Heart to Heart Pregnancy Resource Center, located on North Eagle River Loop, provides things like maternity clothes, bottles, baby clothing, diapers, pregnancy testing, counseling, and referrals. Eighty five to one hundred women receive help each month. Heart to Heart has also been a recipient of items donated by R4R.
